Here are some tips for Generation Y jobseekers in tough times
Those born between the late 1970s and 2001 are Generation Y graduates and first-jobbers. But what a time to start the search; it's the worst ever job availability and staff reduction era. This is the time that the "last in first out" principle is applied in many organizations.
What’s a recession?
The Generation Y crowd doesn't know what a recession is – they have never experienced one, so the current economic downturn comes as a shock. Businesses are busy assessing staffing levels and in such an atmosphere, it's inevitable that younger workers may find themselves jobless.
But I have a degree
Generation Y naturally assumes that years of university study should be enough to secure employment, but in current economic conditions, a degree is no longer the meal ticket that it used to be. Employers are adopting a wait-and-see approach when hiring permanent staff. They can afford to pick and choose in times like these.
So what's to do?
Jobseekers should consider temporary roles that will enable them to stay active in the marketplace and maintain an edge over fellow jobseekers, including those with more work experience. Temporary roles offer many of the same benefits as permanent employment, such as holiday and sick pay, as well as vital exposure to different industry sectors.
Be open
In this increasingly competitive marketplace, employers will look favorably on jobseekers that keep their resume up to date and use initiative to increase both their skills and on-the-job experience. A sensible employer will see the value of taking on junior members of staff on work experience placements or assignments, as there is limited risk and a low level of commitment on their part. Generation Y should also be open to working in industry sectors that aren't so glamorous. ... click here to read the rest of the article titled "Are you from the Y Generation and looking for a job?"
