America and rest of the world needs to invest in alternative fuel sources to replace the rapidly dwindling petroleum resources. Considering how much damage petroleum fuels and products have done to the environment, it’s a no-brainer. Thankfully, Warren McLaren of Treehugger reports that there’s another potential biofuel under the sun that may surprise you. It’s agave, a South American plant that has a lot to do with making tequila.
How would this work? Well, because agave is high in sugar and won’t constrict corn crops like ethanol does, it’s an attractive option. Molasses (a byproduct of sugar cane) is used for ethanol in Australia. The climate down under is considered by many to be an ideal place to start a potential agave biofuel industry, since the plant can grow in a desert.
